Assistant Controller

Assistant Controller – Financial Services

New York City | Up to $175K Base

I’m partnering with a growing financial institution on a high-priority search for an Assistant Controller to join its accounting leadership team.

This is a true operational #2 opportunity within Accounting. The individual will work closely with the Chief Accounting Officer, take significant ownership of day-to-day accounting operations, and help lead the monthly and quarterly close.

This is not a narrow financial reporting or technical accounting position. The team is looking for someone who can take ownership, manage staff, review accounting deliverables, coordinate with auditors, and help run the accounting function.

Key Responsibilities:

- Own and oversee key components of the monthly and quarterly close

- Review journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting and other accounting deliverables

- Manage and develop accounting team members

- Partner closely with the CAO on day-to-day controllership responsibilities

- Coordinate with internal and external auditors

- Support regulatory reporting and technical accounting matters

- Strengthen accounting processes, controls and reporting

- Partner across Finance, Operations, Risk and Technology

- Play a key role in upcoming systems and finance transformation initiatives

Ideal Background:

- Approximately 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience

- CPA required

- Big 4 experience strongly preferred

- Financial services experience required;
banking experience is highly desirable

- Combination of public accounting and hands-on industry accounting experience preferred

- Experience owning or reviewing the close and managing staff

- Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations and internal controls

- Ability to operate as a hands-on accounting leader rather than within a narrow accounting silo

Why Explore It:

- True Assistant Controller / #2 opportunity

- Direct exposure to an experienced CAO

- Broad ownership across the accounting function

- High visibility within a midsized financial institution

- Significant systems and transformation exposure

- Strong long-term path toward Controller, CAO or CFO-level leadership

Compensation: Up to approximately $175K base, depending on experience.

If you’re a CPA with a strong financial services accounting background and are looking for broader ownership and a path toward accounting leadership, please reach out directly or apply for a confidential conversation.
