THE ROLE | STAFF ACCOUNTANT, RETAIL ACCOUNTING
Max Mara is looking for a Staff Accountant to join our Finance team in New York.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in supporting the financial operations of a global luxury fashion house, with a focus on our retail and e-commerce business . The role will oversee sales and payment reconciliations, sales tax compliance, journal entries, SAP accounting activities, and month-end close, while partnering closely with teams across the organization.
We are looking for an analytical, detail-oriented professional who brings strong accounting expertise, a proactive mindset, and an interest in working within a dynamic luxury retail environment.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
• Prepare and file sales tax returns in accordance with applicable regulations and deadlines
• Perform daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations across retail and e-commerce channels
• Reconcile sales transactions and revenue postings within SAP
• Reconcile credit card, PayPal, and other digital payment provider settlements
• Investigate and resolve discrepancies across sales reports, payment settlements, bank deposits, and accounting records
• Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, reclassifications, and month-end adjustments
• Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
• Maintain detailed reconciliation schedules and supporting documentation
• Manage accounting and reconciliation for employee clothing allowance programs
• Partner with Retail Operations, AP, AR, and external partners to support efficient financial processes
• Support internal and external audits
• Contribute to process improvements, reporting efficiencies, and internal controls
WHAT YOU BRING
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 2–4 years of accounting experience, ideally within retail, fashion, luxury, consumer products, or a related industry
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and financial controls
• Experience with sales tax filings and compliance
• Advanced Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and large-data-set analysis
• Experience with SAP or a comparable ERP system
• Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and manage multiple priorities
NICE TO HAVE
• Experience reconciling retail sales, POS transactions, and payment processor settlements
• Experience within a luxury, fashion, or multi-store retail environment
• Exposure to e-commerce accounting and reconciliation
• Familiarity with month-end close and financial reporting
• A proactive, solutions-oriented approach to problem solving
